I'm thinking about switching hosted Exchange providers, perhaps even running my own Exchange server as I have in the past. The big challenge is to store my calendar, contacts, etc in such a way that they are easily transferrable to another Exchange server mailbox. Backing up other items such as categories would be nice, but not essential, as I believe those are stored locally in Outlook 2007 ( my client ). Thanks in advance!

We're looking at upgrading our company from POP to hosted exchange. Are there any major downsides that aren't publicized by the hosting vendors?
The main disadvantage over using Exchange in-house is the fact that you're relying on a third party for what is possibly one of your most critical business tools (email).
Check your contract carefully and remember cheapest may not be best (they may for example say 99% uptime, which is still a three or four days a year without email!)
Also note that Exchange can be a bit of a pig when it comes to bandwidth and traffic, so ensure that if there's a lot of you connecting to the hosted server you have the bandwidth to do so (sharing calendars etc otherwise is miserable).
Finally, be aware that any changes and additional users may be subject to a change control with the hosted provider (so may take a week or more to get things changed!)
However, as you're using POP at the moment, you'll find hosted exchange far superior to your current email situation and the addition of items like calendaring and shared folders will be a welcome break. You should check to see if your provider offers mobile email as well for smartphones.

We have a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server environment with approximately 8 Windows 2000 servers and 80 workstations.
We are not running Active Directory or any domain based policies. Its a simple network really. We currently use Outlook 2003 with POP3 email that is hosted by our ISP.
We want to deploy Microsoft Exchange server so that Outlook 2003 can use more advanced features like calendaring, etc. We need to also have Outlook Web Access.
Do we need to convert to active directory, or can I do this without having to convert right now?

You must have active directory to use exchange server 2000 or 2003. It is not very difficult to install active directory especially if you don't plan to use group policies but if you do decide to deploy it I would recommend using a 2003 server as the domain controller as there are many improvements to active directory from 2000.

There are DNS services that will let you host a web site or service using a dynamic IP, but because of the way DNS changes propagate you won't get reliable service.
I work for a small company without an IT dept. We have Win Server SBS 2003 which has exchange. I need to setup 2 users to have their Email/Calendar/Contacts pushed to their desktops and phones. One phone is WinMo and the other is Android based. The issue is that our website and email are both hosted by a domain host. Exchange will be set to pull the POP3 email from the domain host then push to the Comps and Phones. Is this possible to configure without having to move the website and email hosting to our server? Do we need a domain name for our server, or should we be able to access this through our ISPs IP?

Thats fine, you can hosting the exchange server locally, you just need to have it hosted. So if you host it locally, you just need to have the webhost add your exchange record into their dns and then make it the mail and MX record. Then you will need to configure exchange for the inbound connections. But that's it, you should have documentation with exchange on how to set it up internally and if not, refer to this;
