Exchange students: sending your child abroad and hosting a foreign student?
Host an Exchange Student

On the subject of exchange studies what are some organizations like ASPECT foundation that allow you to send your child abroad in exchange for hosting a foreign student. I'd appreciate any information that you can give me.

It doesn't exactly work that way -- a one-to-one exchange. Most programs will give you an allowance off of sending YOUR child if you host however.

The top three are AFS, YFU and Rotary Exchange -- although Aspect isn't a bad program either. I'm not sure of the specifics of Rotary, as they are set up differently from the others. But generally, if you host a student, you do get a discount for your child.

If you wish to host, you really need to contact the school that the student would attend. There are a great many programs out there and not all schools accept all programs. The counselor will have that information. Also, the slots for exchange students are generally limited -- so you'll want to get on the list as soon as possible.

Once you get contact information, set up some interviews (remember, YOU are in the driver's seat as most programs actively seek both host families AND students to travel abroad). Go with the organization you feel most comfortable.

Good luck!

What is the best shared Microsoft Exchange hosting service?
Host a YFU Exchange Student

I am looking for a shared Microsoft Exchange 2003 hosting service, suitable for hosting about five (5) personal email accounts. It needs to be reliable, with a large quota, and access via Outlook Web Access (OWA).
I have found the 1&1 (1and1.com) hosted Microsoft Exchange service to be quite interesting when considering the features and price, but they don't have the best ratings and reviews.

oops no answers yet... i was hoping to learn too.

but try cihost.com.. i have been using them. was good, but recently my shared server has been some problems. my history with them is about 8+yrs

Can you write-off any expenses of hosting an exchange student on your taxes?
Sharing a Meal

I am paid a monthly amount by a local school for hosting an exchange student in my home. At year-end I am 1099'd and need to report the amount as taxable income. Can I offset this additional income tax with any write-off of expenses incurred, like for providing food, heat, water, etc.?

Actually, there is a deduction available under some circumstances, if you itemize. See page 152 of IRS Publication 17 under the heading "Expenses Paid for Student Living with You". If you qualify, the deduction would be itemized as a charitable deduction.

Im hosting and exchange student and i need ideas on what we could do?
Holiday Cheer - Thai Student, 2009

I am 16 years old and i am hosting and exchange student from quebec. I live in manitoba. She is here for three months and i want to make this the best experience for her. I will be going out to her house also for 3 months so i want to treat her well so i get treated the same way out there. Her english skills are poor so i think it kind of limits our playing field. What can we do? Any suggestions will greatly help me

I know you said her english skills are poor but if she understands english well and just cant speak it you could take her to the movies. there are also things like bowling, mini golfing, lazer tag, and pretty much anything else like that anyone can play if they have half a brain :) or think of some of the things you and your friends normally enjoy doing and take her to do that. maybe a favorite burger place? hope i helped! goo luck and have fun!

How would you feel about hosting a foreign exchange student in your home?
AFSers During the Holidays

I am directing this question not only at Americans but at all nationalities who might read the question and have thoughts about the subject.

This year my family is hosting two students, one from Germany and one from Hong Kong, both girls. In the past we have hosted two boys from Germany, one boy from Korea, and one girl each from Germany and Hong Kong. This is our third full year to host, and we also hosted for a partial year.

Our son was a foreign exchange student in Germany for a year.

We have had exceptional kids to work with. The experiences have been incredible and we are connected to all of our past and present kids.

Would you consider hosting a child from a foreign land?
I'm not recruiting, although my wife is coordinating placements and trying to recruit families in our local area. (South Texas.)

I was just interested in seeing what sort of response I would get from the Yahoo! Answers community. I expected some people to respond as you have, and I also expected some to say "no way," and others to simply be curious about the programs.

From experience I can tell you that if you like young people and enjoy interacting with other cultures it is an experience difficult to match other than by doing a lot of traveling on your own.

I'm on my 13th! Our first just as an arrival family. I have four Danes, three Germans, two Swedes, two Swiss, one Finn and one Brasilian!
As you can tell, we love it. We've also had exceptional students to work with as well ... and we wouldn't trade any of them!
To top it all off, we spent our 25th anniversary on a three-week tour of Europe visiting many of them!
Hosting not only gives you a new son or daughter, but it gives you a whole new family as well!
The one thing that concerns me about your question however, is that it ALMOST seems like a recruitment of host families. I'm sure you really didn't mean it that way, but I certainly would NOT be looking for families for students on the Internet!
Congratulations on your international family!
